Borrowing Is Beautiful

Books from the library are meaningful home adornments. The fact that I can change this group of great reads every week without the hassle of a yard sale, or storage space, is what separates the library from any other place on earth. They love to share my favorites, like this one, again and again.

Borrow the beauty. Keep the knowledge. Library.

The Sense Of An Ending

“How often do we tell our own life story? How often do we adjust, embellish, make sly cuts? And the longer life goes on, the fewer are those around to challenge our account, to remind us that our life is not our life, merely the story we have told about our life. Told to others, but—mainly—to ourselves.”
~ The Sense Of An Ending

Our book club read this month. Have you wrapped your brain around it? Let's discuss.

Who and Why and What If

Monday was Earth Day. The children came home from school and shared cool facts about our planet's natural resources, and then we went on with our day as usual. I made a ham for dinner, Nick and Arielle went to guitar and piano lessons, John ran down the street for baseball practice. Having twenty minutes to myself, I started making new flower necklaces for Prince Caspian and Odysseus. I know what you're thinking; this is absolutely riveting, Michele.

After everyone was showered and in their pj's, we gathered around the TV to watch Surviving Progress. Halfway through the documentary, our two youngest were snoring, but Nick's eyes never left the screen. Carl and I kept pausing the film to answer his questions to the best of our ability. Seven billion people, soon to be nine billion. Finite resources in a materialistic society. A world financial market severely in debt. Nick's questions ~ who? why? what if? ~ kept coming. We couldn't answer them all. I'm still thinking about these issues today. And will be pondering them tomorrow.

As Nick was rushing out the door this morning for school, he kissed my cheek and voiced what my heart knows is true. Earth day is every day. As we go on with our daily lives of work, school, piano lessons, house cleaning and flower necklace making, the questions of who and why and what if remain.

National Library Week

National Library Week had me reminiscing:

Our family has been abundantly blessed by the library and their borrowed beauty. We've started traditions, discovered new hobbies, but most importantly, we have broadened our worldview while living and learning the virtue of sharing.

Every week, every season, every day should be a library day. All you need is a library card.

One Day Without Shoes

Going barefoot is a luxury for most of us. Now that the weather is warming up, I try to forgo footwear at every chance. But the second I find an anthill in the backyard, or I'm heading to the grocery store, my feet want comfy treats. Right now there are moms walking miles for food and water, without shoes. Children walking miles - ill, feverish children - to access healthcare, without shoes.

Tomorrow is TOMS One Day Without Shoes campaign. You might be wearing a pair of their groovy soles right now. Would you, could you take them off for one day?

TOMS has partnered with my favorite charity, Partners In Health. Never heard of Dr. Paul Farmer? He's the rockstar - the Bono if you will - of medical social justice. This book shattered some of my long standing beliefs and forever changed the way we give as a family.

While you're contemplating the difficulty of showing up at work tomorrow without shoes, introduce your family to these amazing people and places with great reads from the library.

I don't know if I'll have the confidence to walk around town tomorrow barefoot. Embarrassment, lack of safety, not to mention the grimy muck I'd be tracking into schools and businesses. I may opt for some uncomfortable flip flops that will gift me berry red blisters. But I'll be thinking about those that need shoes, and really, isn't that the point?

What would stop you from going one day without shoes?

I am not compensated in any way by TOMS or Partners In Health. Or the library. Or any sponsor. Ever. This blog is and will always be about sharing passionate ideas without sponsors, which is exactly the way the library shares with us.

Borrowing Beauty For A Friend

"How much sweeter life would be if it all happened in reverse,
if, after decades of disappointments, you finally arrived at
an age when you had conceded nothing,
when everything was possible.”
                                                                     ~The Age Of Miracles

Can I brag on my local librarian a bit? Saturday I was in need of some borrowed beauty for a friend that can't drive for the next four weeks. But I was stressing out trying to find the right chapter books. She's well read - more so than me. Really.

Bev, our children's librarian, effortlessly selected books I fancied reading as well. Your local librarians want to do the same for you, and your friends, and your family.

Borrow The Beauty. Keep The Knowledge. Library.

What Sharing Looks Like

I'm passionate about birding, even though this time last year I couldn't have identified birds in our yard beyond a robin. Maybe a crow.  Our local library was kind enough to let me share their own borrowed beauty by displaying my favorite books, cd's, movies and craft/activity books. Because they shared with our family, we were inspired to share with others. And sharing just makes life sweeter.

Have a passion you'd like to share with others? The library might be the place to start. I'm positive they wrote the book on sharing (and then they go and share that, too).

Spring Is For Sharing

A precious Carolina Wren family is nesting on our back porch. Both parents make endless round trips to feed their nestlings, reminding us of speedy delivery drivers. We share a bit of shelter and they share the wonder of nature. You can see a photo of their nest here

Speaking of sharing, guess what borrowed beauty the library is lending now?

Arielle is over the moon. With a few clicks, she has the latest National Geographic Traveler or Islands magazine on her iPad. I'm probably always going to prefer turning paper wings, I mean, pages. For those of you that love your digital devices, the library can hook you up. All you need is your library card. Check them out today.

Road Trip

I'm taking a spring holiday this week with family. The library is vacationing with us - Nick just started this series. Arielle swoony adores this series. John devours this series. I've thrown together a funky mix of genres and still can't let go of this borrowed beauty

What are your plans for spring break? Are you traveling with some great reads? Please share.
