Why Borrowing Is Better

According to discussions on Amazon.com and Goodreads.com, people buy books, but rarely read them. I happen to agree, partly. I buy books I've already read and loved, usually from the used book sale table at the library.

Occasionally I'll buy books (or borrow from friends) for my children, like this and this, because the hold list for them is too long. But there are so many book series similar to these books just waiting for you to pick them off the shelf (your librarian can help you find them, like this and this), that it makes more sense to borrow.

I read most of the books I borrow because I know they aren't mine. That three week time limit does something magical. Borrowing also gives me the freedom to take risks, to explore new interests without regret.

My personal experience is if you library, you'll read more, both on your own and with your children. The library specializes in helping us share more and spend less.

Borrow the beauty, keep the knowledge. Library.

How about you? Do you read more when you buy, or borrow?

xoxo Michele

Books Help Babies Grow (And A Dream Deferred)

Last week, I spied the cutest display at our local library. A wonderful patron donated "potted books" that had been decorations from a family member's baby shower.

It had me thinking about when I was in the hospital having my children, and how I wished that in addition to the diaper bag the nurses gave me filled with bottles and formula, they would have handed me a library tote filled with a beautifully balanced collection

I wish they would have explained the importance of reading every day with my baby - even if my eight pound bundle of joy didn't understand what I was saying. That reading is nourishment for the brain. That the library would be a great place to interact with other new parents at story time, or Spanish class. I wish someone would have taken two minutes to share how my library card could be used to put books, music, movies, cookbooks, magazines, and more, on hold online.

I dream about making that type of library tote available to each new parent as he or she is contemplating what will become priorities in their family schedule. Forgive my lack of posts as I focus what little free time I have on that dream. I'm open to ideas and suggestions, please contact me if you have a similar passion.

Endless Riches For Expensive Teens

"Patience and love can do anything." ~ The House of the Scorpion

I have a teenager now. He's growing like kudzu, and if his appetite is any indication of what's coming, my daily attire will have to include a pink hairnet and flouncy birdie apron.

His craving for reading has increased as well, and we're thankful the library loves to support his habit. Free (including digital) books, music, movies, magazines, and more.

Teens are positively pricey. Libraries are absolutely priceless.

Finding Borrowed Beauty In Cape May

Most of us know Cape May, New Jersey, has beautiful beaches and stunning Victorian homes. But I'm going to let you in on a big secret known only to birders: some of the area's finest views and wonderful wildlife can be found without crowds or touristy prices.

Here are three places not to miss:

Stop in at the Cape May Bird Observatory Office/Northwood Center. For less than $40 you'll become a CMBO member and have access to The Beanery as well as bird walks and special classes.

My coveted Cape May souvenir (my first binoculars sticker).

And while you're on vacation, don't forget to stop in at the local library. For a small fee you can get a temporary library card and load up on endless borrowed beauty for the entire family.

To see my birding photos and additional Cape May fun, follow me on Instagram.

Imperfectly Perfect

"Like a mother loves a daughter, imperfectly and without roots." ~ The Language of Flowers

If you only read one book this summer, this should be it. Thank you, Rosie, for recommending this great read (you're the prettiest pink rose to me).

Okay, now I'm really out of here for two weeks.

Riding Shotgun

We wouldn't dream of going on vacation without the library.

To Kill A Mockingbird on CD for the car trip. Bird books (I'm so excited about this one) for the beach. Greek myths for evening reads. Bible stories for breakfast. Science and math experiments for possible rainy day fun. Fiction for everyone.

Spend less and share more on your vacation, the library has you covered.

I'll be back in two weeks.

Top Ten Rainy Day Reads

(10). “What I say is, a town isn't a town without a bookstore. It may call itself a town, but unless it's got a bookstore it knows it's not fooling a soul.” American Gods by Neil Gaiman

(9). “The father’s job is to teach his children how to be warriors, to give them the confidence to get on the horse to ride into battle when it’s necessary to do so. If you don’t get that from your father, you have to teach yourself.”

(8). “Common thistle is everywhere,” she said. “Which is perhaps why human beings are so relentlessly unkind to one another.”

(7). "Very depressing birthday party today at home of Lilly’s friend Leslie Torrini. House is mansion where Lafayette once stayed. Torrinis showed us Lafayette’s room: now their “Fun Den.” Plasma TV, pinball game, foot massager. Thirty acres, six garages (they call them “outbuildings”): one for Ferraris (three), one for Porsches (two, plus one he is rebuilding), one for historical merry-go-round they are restoring as family(!). Across trout-stocked stream, red Oriental bridge flown in from China. Showed us hoofmark from some dynasty. In front room, near Steinway, plaster cast of hoofmark from even earlier dynasty, in wood of different bridge. Picasso autograph, Disney autograph, dress Greta Garbo once wore, all displayed in massive mahogany cabinet."

(6). “I can't believe anyone would voluntarily run 26 miles. Sometimes I sit on the couch cross-legged because I don't feel like walking to the bathroom.”
Read anything by Jen Lancaster

(5). “But since then I've learned to just go ahead and take fairness out of the equation. If you do, things stand the chance of making a whole lot more sense.”

(4). “Love makes you want to be a better man. But maybe love, real love, also gives you permission to just be the man you are.”

(3). “People ask every day, "Why was I put on earth?" As if there is perhaps one reason. The truth is that there are too many reasons to count, and each reason and each soul connects to every other.”

(2). “When I say that evil has to do with killing, I do not mean to restrict myself to corporeal murder. Evil is that which kills spirit. There are various essential attributes of life -- particularly human life -- such as sentience, mobility, awareness, growth, autonomy, will. It is possible to kill or attempt to kill one of these attributes without actually destroying the body. Thus we may "break" a horse or even a child without harming a hair on its head."

(1). “Libraries really are wonderful. They're better than bookshops, even. I mean bookshops make a profit on selling you books, but libraries just sit there lending you books quietly out of the goodness of their hearts.”

Lots of reading going on here in North Rainolina. Are you in the heat wave or the flood watch zone?

Finding Nectar

Finding nectar is harder when the flowers are hidden. That's how I feel about Google Reader going away. I'm now following my favorite blogs through email, and hope you will continue to follow me by email as well.

See that "Follow By Email" box to the right? Just put your address in there and hit submit. Fast, easy, and free!

Great news! The nectar of the library, like flowers, is in plain view. We are spending less and sharing more of their sweet summer reading programs for every age.

Hope you'll land back here soon.

{A Mighty Girl} Misstep

At first, I was delighted to discover my photograph featured on A Mighty Girl, even if they didn't bother to ask me or mention the source. Then I thought about it. Do I want my photos being used to sell books, when my platform is all about borrowed beauty from the library? The answer is no.

Libraries use my materials, and I want them to continue without hesitation or permission. In fact, anyone can use my materials for library purposes, that is why I blog. When your motto is Spend Less - Share More: Library, it's bizarre to see your portrait used to persuade people to spend money on (of all things) books you can borrow from your library.

Have you had your materials used by others without permission, or without being given credit?

I forgive your misstep, A Mighty Girl. But if you truly want to share the empowerment of reading with girls of all ages, any proceeds you make on the sale of Matilda should be forwarded to the library of your choice.

Nothing Boring About Bernadette

“That's right,' she told the girls. 'You are bored.
And I'm going to let you in on a little secret about life.
You think it's boring now? Well, it only gets more boring.
The sooner you learn it's on you to make life interesting,
the better off you'll be.” ~ Where'd You Go, Bernadette

I checked out this great read in the spring, but didn't get a chance to revel in its laugh out loud comedy until now. I'm so thankful I was able to savor every page under a shady tree at the swimming hole during the afternoon sunshine of summer. Pair it with Abbey Road and your adventure is set. I'm hoping Leslie Mann will play Bernadette in the upcoming movie, how about you?

And a great reminder for when our children (or we, you know I mean me) complain there's nothing to do:

Summer Is Sweeter With Tennessee

“What is straight? A line can be straight, or a street,
but the human heart, oh, no, it's curved
like a road through mountains.”  ~ A Streetcar Named Desire

Summer and Tennessee Williams go together like sea and sand. Whether you choose A Streetcar Named Desire with Marlon Brando, or one of his plays like Cat On A Hot Tin Roof - he is a treat worth discovering and sharing with your family.

If you're like me, you'll choose both and add a book on cocktails for the summer sunsets on the front porch. And you'll add some music (for me, it's the Dave Matthews Band).

Hope you're enjoying your summer. The library makes it sweeter.

When You're Ready...

Come and get it. My daughter insists the library isn't what Selena Gomez is crooning about. But I disagree. It's all about love and no regrets, and happens to be my theme song as I capture borrowed beauty waiting just for me from the hold shelf.

Love shopping online? The library has made it quick and easy to find what you're looking for - Doctor Who, No One Could Have Guessed The Weather, or maybe you've yet to start or finish this series (like us). Put them on hold, and when you're ready - come and get it.

Father's Day Collection In Five Minutes

Male father bluebird (left) teaching his son (right) to sing and hunt.

We've been watching father bluebirds with their sons throughout our neighborhood. A birder friend told me the fathers have a week or so to teach their sons to sing and hunt, and then they go back to nesting and the young male leaves in search of a mate. How wonderful to know the natural world is celebrating the importance of fathers as we also pay tribute to dads this weekend.

How do you let your favorite dad know he is appreciated without spending? Shop the library. Hubby isn't a reader, but he loves audiobooks. And Winston Churchill. I love that we can celebrate him and his interests with our library card.

Actually, hubby loves to read graphic novels and comic books, especially Berkeley Breathed, Gary Larson, and Bill Watterson. The library carries and shares all of them.

Why celebrate for one day when the library lets you borrow this beauty for weeks. In five minutes or less I can create vignettes throughout the house that let our children's fabulous father know we love him.

Shopping the library with the children is the best part. We put together a list of Carl's hobbies, history and sports interests, movies and music preferences, and then discover them throughout the library. When we're pressed for time, we go online and shop from home.

The library leads to relaxation for dad.

More Father's Day inspiration here

Librarians are standing by, what borrowed beauty will you discover today?

Recommendations, And Regrets

Have you ever recommended a book to a friend, and then inwardly, immediately regretted it? What if they don't like it as much as I did? Scratch that, what if they hated it, and by association, hate me?

Last week I finished this book, and then wildly went about recommending it to everyone I love, or know on a first name basis. And then felt a quick twinge of regret. Because books I love may not be books you love.

Here's the genius of the library - they carry it all. Not just the latest trends or what the publishers are trying to push. They have the classics, the underdogs, and everything in between. The same goes for movies and music. I can count on one hand the movie DVD's and music CD's we own, but we have a new rotation of both in our home each week, thanks to the library.

Libraries are the carriers of the carriers of civilization.

Borrowing brings honesty. Because I didn't convince you to spend $25.00 on a hardback book you'd rather burn than place on your bookshelf, you're more likely to provide honest feedback about what you liked (or didn't).

What have you read lately and wanted to/or did recommend? Any regrets? Did you have a book recommended and it wasn't for you? I'd love to hear from you.

Less regrets, More recommendations: Library.

xoxo Michele

The Dog Stars

They bred dogs for everything else, even for diving
for fish, why didn't they breed them to live longer,
to live as long as man?   ~The Dog Stars

Even though my dear bloggy friend Lilly doesn't like fiction (it won't stop me from publicly begging her to give The Dog Stars a try - it's pretty close to perfection), she's still a huge library advocate. Don't miss her summer reads selection.

Are you a Fiction Fan? Mystery Maverick? Graphic Novel Goddess? Summer is the perfect season to find out, expand your horizon, and ask a librarian for a few new recommendations. I wouldn't have found the book above without their help.

With a library card you have thousands of new reads, music, movies, magazines, and cookbooks - and now free online movies and TV shows from Hoopla, just waiting for you to discover their beauty. Spending less and sharing more, only at the library.

Beautifully Balanced Collections (Join Me)

Last night, I introduced Nick to My Father's Glory. It's subtitled, but he loved it. Just for fun, Nick asked to watch my favorite foreign film again - but this time in English, and who am I to argue? Clearly, this explains why I haven't been blogging.

We're in the midst of the last week of school, critiquing movies, starting a herb and vegetable garden (even if it's on my porch), and discussing the French Revolution. Bedtime hilarity has been taken to a new level with this for the kids and this for me. We're learning through our play, thanks to the library.

Put a Beautifully Balanced Collection together at your library this week and let me know what you've created. I'll share some of your collections in an upcoming post. All you need is your imagination and a library card.

Want me to create a collection for you? Leave me a message.

Don't All Vacations End In A Cemetery?

Georgia Aquarium
We visited Atlanta over Memorial Day weekend and fell in love with the city, the people, the soulful flavor and sacred history of the south.

Atlanta Zoo

We explored all the touristy places. Banqueted on local cuisine. Some of us read while others frolicked in the pool. It was both exhilarating and relaxing. Pretty much perfection.

Of course I brought library books:
Creating Room To Read (John Wood = my newest hero)

But nothing could have prepared me for the Oakland Cemetery. I had read about it in the tourist guide you find next to the hotel room phone. It was  conveniently located two blocks from the zoo, so convincing hubby we couldn't miss this sacred ground only required a beer and appetizer of calamari at lunch.

The Oakland Cemetery

Consulting the visitor center map we made a game of finding the Lion Of Atlanta statue. He stands guard over almost 3000 unknown confederate soldiers. I'll skip the part of navigating the map upside-down, consequently searching in the opposite direction for the better part of an hour until youngest son had a V8 moment. John took me by the hand and led me to the most heart-wrenching statue I've ever laid eyes on. I sat on the bench and wept. Leave me here, I told the family. Persuading me to depart only required a Haagen Daz Coffee Almond Crunch bar, but it's the first place I'll want to visit if we are lucky enough to go back to Atlanta.

As Pat Conroy once stated, this is The Iliad with a southern accent.

I should mention that Margaret Mitchell is also buried in this historic cemetery, which prompted a date this weekend with Arielle to watch Gone With The Wind, and for me a re-reading of the timeless classic. A dear girlfriend also recommended this and this.

Had a vacation end in an beautifully unexpected location? Please share.

Library For The Win

I'll be on a bloggy break for a few days. We're celebrating heroes (like Jimmy Doolittle) and fourteen years of marriage. That makes me feel like a bit of hero, fourteen years.

How do you celebrate Memorial Day Weekend? The library can help you share more and spend less.
